StreetReporterSports understands the deal is worth £200,000-a-week and represents a huge rise for the summer. It is thought to be the same deal that has been on the table for some time.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper initiated talks after the collapse of a £29million move to Madrid as he had grown tired of the furore over his future.
United said in a statement released on their official Twitter account: ‘David de Gea has signed a new four-year contract at Manchester United with an option to extend for a further year.’
United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward remained in contact with De Gea’s agent, Jorge Mendes, throughout the summer and issued a number of reminders that the offer stood despite Real’s interest.
Woodward spoke to Mendes following the collapse of the Real deal while efforts in Manchester were stepped up to assure De Gea that United were very keen on him to stay and that the club viewed him as the best goalkeeper in the world.
Mendes was at United’s training ground on Thursday for further talks with manager Louis van Gaal and club officials. They were joined by De Gea and members of his family.
Speaking to United’s official website, De Gea said: ‘I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career. I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans.
‘Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop my career. I’m looking forward to putting a difficult summer behind me and concentrating on working hard to improve and help my teammates to be successful.’
Red Devils boss Van Gaal now hopes the Spanish stopper will become ‘part of the team for many years to come’.
He added: ‘I am absolutely delighted David has signed a new contract. He is one of the best goalkeepers in world football. I am very pleased that he will be part of the team for many years to come.
