For timely intervention in the alleged rape of a three year-old, by an adult neighbour, the Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Imohinmi Edgal, has been commended by a human right group, Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA)
The three years old rape victim, (name withheld) was alleged raped on November 10, by a 26 year-old man, identified as Sunday, at their residence, on Awolowo way, Ikorodu area of the state.
The HURMA, through its national convener/executive director, Comrade Isiak Olaitan Buna, stated that upon notified of the heinous act, it reported the incident to the Commissioner, through CSO’s platform.
The group also stated that as soon as the police boss heard of the incident, he invited all parties and also sent the little girl to Mirabel Center, where it was confirmed that she was indeed rape.
Comrade Buna states: “the Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA) hereby appreciate the Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Edgal, alongside all good and sincere elements within the force working with pure spirit to redeem the long battered image of the Nigeria Police Force.
“On Tuesday, November 28, the Police Commissioner in his response to our (HURMA) report to the C.P/ C.S.O platform. He invited the family of the raped child to the palace of Oba Kabiru Olawale, the Ayogburen of Ikorodu alongside the two D.P.O’s involved with the Area Commander.
“The Commissioner of Police who was infuriated upon learning that the grandmother of the raped girl, Mrs. Selimot Rafiu, was remanded in prison for like 5 days until the intervention of HURMA. He instantly directed that the matter be brought to his office, and also instructed that the case against the rape victim grandmother be withdrawn by Police of Igbogbo Division, and the file brought to his office.
“As that was not enough, the police boss, also promised necessary medical attention to the affected girl, and he directed the victim’s family to Mirabel Centre, where it was confirmed that the girl was truly raped, but the extent of damages done can only be revealed to the C. P.
“It is on this and many more are the reasons why HURMA is commending the new Police Commissioner in the state”.
This medium learned from HURMA’s Executive Director, Comrade Buna, that the Commissioner of Police, has ordered that the suspect be brought to his office fur further interrogation.
Prior to the intervention of HURMA and Commissioner of Police, Comrade Buna stated that the rape victim’s grandmother, Mrs. Selimot Rafiu, who is in her 60s, has been charged to court by Police, and spent five days in detention.
Also speaking on h the promptness of the CP to issues in the state, another leadership of HURMA, Barrister Lekan Alabi, tasked all other police officers in the state to learn from the good leadership style of Mr. Edgal.
